Commitment to Measure and Eliminate Gender Pay Gaps at Boğaziçi University

At Boğaziçi University, salary calculations for academic staff, civil servants, contracted staff and labourers are based on legal regulations. Turkey is a party to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Equal Remuneration Convention No. 100, which aims to ensure pay equality between men and women. This convention guarantees the right of male and female employees to receive equal pay for work of equal value in the same workplace.

At our university:

  • The salaries of civil servants are calculated according to Article 43 of the Civil Servants Law No. 657, regardless of gender, based on factors such as class of service, type of duty and level of education.
  • The salaries for academic staff are determined in accordance with Article 5 of the Higher Education Personnel Law No. 2914 and these calculations are also applied without gender discrimination.
  • The wages of the personnel with labour status are regulated in accordance with Article 5 of the Labour Law No. 4857. According to this law, a lower wage cannot be agreed for a job of the same or equal value on the grounds of gender, and the application of special protective provisions due to gender does not justify a lower wage.

In addition, Article 3 of the Human Rights and Equality Law contains provisions preventing employers from gender discrimination. Our university applies an equal pay policy to all its employees and is committed to eliminating gender-based wage differences.
