6.5.6 Encouraging Conscious Water Use
Conscious Water Use and Sustainable Water Management on Campus
As Boğaziçi University, we encourage conscious water management practices across the campus to ensure sustainable and efficient use of water. Infrastructure projects and awareness-raising activities for water conservation are carried out at our university, and various programs are offered for our students and staff to use water resources responsibly.
Water Saving and Recycling Systems
- Rainwater Harvesting: Rainwater harvesting systems have been established in Kandilli, North and Hisar campuses and these waters are used for cleaning, garden irrigation and reservoir needs. This water is stored in tanks with a capacity of 46 m³ at the Kandilli Campus and 20 m³ at the North Campus.
- Gray Water Recovery: Thanks to the gray water recovery systems installed in some dormitory buildings on our campus, approximately 16 m³ of gray water is recovered and reused every day. These systems play an important role in meeting the total water demand of the campus.
Technological Solutions Providing Water Efficiency
- Sensor Faucets and Water Saving Cartridges: In our dormitories, water saving cartridges are installed in the faucets to save 35% of water. In addition, faucets used in common areas are equipped with sensor systems, minimizing unnecessary water consumption.
- LEED Certified Buildings: LEED-certified buildings on our campus aim to minimize the impact on water, energy and natural resource consumption by adopting an environmentally sensitive building approach. These buildings are equipped with technical equipment focused on water efficiency and sustainability.

Education and Awareness Programs
- ClimateBU Climate Change and Policies Application and Research Center: Our center conducts research and informs the public on water resources management and sustainability issues related to climate change. By organizing awareness trainings and seminars for our students, we raise awareness about the responsible use of water.
- Environment Club Activities: The Environmental Club, which is run by our university students, organizes awareness events on water conservation and environmental protection on campus and offers informative programs for students.
