Boğaziçi University: Participation in Government Research

Boğaziçi University carries out policy-oriented research in cooperation with government departments. The University's Application and Research Centres (UYGAR) aim to link academic research with practical policy and provide scientific contributions to policy development processes. These centres collaborate with policy makers at local, national and international levels, share research findings and provide strategic recommendations to decision makers.

Featured Centres:

  • Social Policy Forum Application and Research Centre: The Centre carries out projects supported by the Ministry of Development of the Republic of Turkey and contributes to social policy decisions. The Centre supports policy processes by sharing research results with international organisations and policy makers.
  • Climate Change and Policies Application and Research Centre (İklimBU): It provides consultancy to local and international policy makers by offering solutions on issues such as climate change, renewable energy and emission reduction.
  • Life Sciences Application and Research Centre: It carries out projects funded by the financial cooperation of the European Union and the Republic of Turkey and cooperates with policy makers by conducting studies on bioeconomy.
  • Energy Policy Application and Research Centre (EPAM): The Centre provides scientific support to the development of Turkey's energy policies. The Centre strengthens information and data capacity on energy markets and provides guidance to policy makers.
  • Education Policy Application and Research Centre (BEPAM): The Centre develops policy recommendations for the education system and institutions in the light of research in the field of educational sciences.

Boğaziçi University Academic Receives First Prize from TÜBA: Artificial Intelligence Model Predicting the Time and Location of Crimes Awarded

In the 2024 Doctoral Science Awards co-organised by the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) and TEKNOFEST, Dr. Tuğrul Cabir Hakyemez, a graduate of Boğaziçi University, was awarded first prize in the social and humanities category. Hakyemez drew attention with his doctoral thesis titled ‘Developing a Predictive Policing System (Development of a Dynamic Predictive Policing System),’ which he prepared at the Institute of Social Sciences at Boğaziçi University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Bertan Badur.

In his thesis, he developed an artificial intelligence-based system capable of predicting the location and time of crimes within a city with high accuracy. The model, developed using deep learning algorithms, was tested using crime data from Chicago, one of the largest cities in the United States. The results showed that approximately 80% of daily predictions matched the streets where crimes actually occurred. This success highlighted the project's potential in both academic and practical fields.

Dr. Hakyemez emphasised that his work is one of the first examples of its kind in Turkey and therefore has a pioneering nature. Expressing that being awarded by TÜBA is a great source of pride and motivation, the young academic thanked his advisor Prof. Dr. Bertan Badur and all his professors at Boğaziçi University for their contributions during his thesis process.

The 2024 TÜBA-TEKNOFEST Doctoral Science Awards, which received hundreds of applications, were evaluated by a distinguished jury among doctoral theses in many thematic areas such as artificial intelligence, cyber security, robotics, autonomous systems, and modelling. The awards were presented to their recipients during TEKNOFEST, held in Adana from 2 to 6 October 2024.
