4.3.5 Lifelong learning access policy

LIFELONG LEARNING CENTRE
FROM THE EXECUTIVE BOARD
In addition to our daily lives, we are living in a dynamic age where professional needs are changing at a rapid pace. In the face of the opportunities offered by rapidly advancing technologies and shifting social needs, the demand for many jobs and professions is undergoing change. Whilst some jobs are being automated, new jobs that did not previously exist are emerging, and some jobs are taking on new forms that require a combination of various skills.
For example, in the process that began with the emergence of digital technologies such as emails and electronic databases, artificial intelligence, robots and data analytics have entered our lives and have begun to be counted among the leading competencies in many sectors. The digitalisation that gained momentum during the pandemic has also triggered a process of change in existing business models.
Meanwhile, as a signatory to the Paris Agreement, Turkey is entering a new era in which sustainability criteria will play a much more dominant role in markets, as the country combats climate change and transitions to a local economy. In this context, identifying, understanding and positioning oneself regarding the opportunities and risks that arise is becoming increasingly important.
In today’s economy, organisations can only sustain their competitiveness in the long term by combining a governance approach capable of accurately interpreting changing needs and taking swift decisions to implement the necessary measures with the capacity to generate innovative technological solutions.
Boğaziçi University Lifelong Learning Centre (BÜYEM) brings together Boğaziçi University’s long-standing experience, extensive knowledge base and dynamic approach to education with the staff of both private and public sector organisations. We look forward to welcoming you to the unique training programmes we have designed within BÜYEM to impart the knowledge, skills and competencies required by the rapid changes taking place worldwide.
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BÜYEM
The Boğaziçi University Centre for Lifelong Learning (BÜYEM) aims to provide ‘lifelong learning’ services of high value to individuals, organisations and society, and to integrate the demands of the modern age with the needs and circumstances of society in these services. In this context, it has adopted the principles of combining theory with practice to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills, providing services in its areas of expertise, adhering to the university’s ethical guidelines, and upholding Boğaziçi University’s quality and standards in all its activities.
Since 2002, BÜYEM has been organising training programmes under the headings of “open courses” and “tailored for organisations”, accessible to people of all ages and professional backgrounds, thereby contributing to the development of qualified human resources in our country; it also provides educational consultancy and examination services to organisations. Despite the economic and financial crises experienced, it has continued to grow, enabling the University’s knowledge base to reach a wider audience. Through its “Lifelong Learning” activities, which are gaining increasing importance today, it has served approximately 100,000 participants and 800 organisations.
BÜYEM has actively participated in domestic and international projects, implementing numerous initiatives within the scope of Corporate Social Responsibility, EU Lifelong Learning Programmes, and the EU Active Employment Programme. By collaborating with relevant departments at universities abroad, it has organised “Faculty Development” and “Study Abroad” programmes. Furthermore, by partnering with various institutions abroad, it has organised the “Doing Business in Turkey” programme.
BÜYEM has been accepted as a member of the “European Association in University Lifelong Learning” (EUCEN) and serves as a founding member of the Turkish Universities Continuing Education Centres Council (TÜSEM).
We invite those wishing to introduce themselves and/or their institutions to the information age of the 21st century to participate in BÜYEM’s activities.

OPINIONS FROM ORGANISATIONS

At Amgen Turkey and Gensenta, we view corporate citizenship as an integral part of our sense of responsibility. Guided by the awareness that comes with being a ‘good company’,
we work with the aim of extending this sense of responsibility to the wider community and the environment. Through our ‘Volunteer Ambassadors’ team, established within the company, we carry out projects that promote social good and raise awareness. We are involved in numerous projects aimed at increasing the number of women leaders in science and promoting gender equality. In this vein, in 2021, we sponsored the “Social Responsibility School” at Boğaziçi University’s Lifelong Education Centre (BÜYEM) under the theme of “Gender Equality”, a cause we wholeheartedly believe in.
Furthermore, I am delighted to be collaborating with BÜYEM again this year as part of the “Women Leaders Shaping the Future of Health” Development Programme, for which I have voluntarily taken on the role of project lead. The interest the programme has generated is truly exciting. In our programme, we have designed modules focusing on how to develop sustainable and effective solutions in the areas of equality, sustainability, leadership and health, in collaboration with industry professionals who have made a difference in the business world and their respective fields. I believe our partnership with BÜYEM will continue for many years to come.
With the hope of undertaking many more projects that will create value together, I would like to extend my thanks to BÜYEM, both on behalf of Amgen Turkey and Gensenta, and on my own behalf.
Güldem Berkman
General Manager of Amgen Turkey and Gensenta

L’Oréal Paris is a global brand that touches the lives of all women every day, through both the services and products it offers and its brand values.
At the heart of L’Oréal Paris’s brand values lies the commitment to empowering women and breaking down the barriers they face.
Building on the value we place on women, we developed the “StandUp – Stand Up Against Street Harassment” programme, which aims to raise global awareness of street harassment. This programme aims to train both women and men using the specially developed 5D method, enabling them to intervene confidently in situations of street harassment they may encounter.
To bring the 5D Method to everyone in Turkey and ensure the training is delivered effectively, we partnered with BÜYEM in 2021. Together, we reached consumers, business partners, our employees and staff at numerous organisations; we raised awareness and, as of November 2021, have trained 45,000 people. We have become the country that implements the Stand Up programme most effectively and with the greatest impact within L’Oréal.
Together with BÜYEM, our aim is to reach many more people and continue to empower women by standing up against street harassment.

Marketing Director at L’Oréal Paris

PWN Istanbul is a global network comprising female and male members who work towards equal opportunities and equal representation in all areas of life. In our association’s strategic plan, our priorities include development and certification programmes, as well as lobbying activities, aimed specifically at developing female talent within the sector and ensuring their advancement to managerial levels.
Leaders and employees from the healthcare sector make up a significant proportion of our association’s volunteers. Although the healthcare sector appears to be in a more advantageous position regarding gender equality compared to other sectors, both globally and in our country, the figures still indicate there is a long way to go. The 17 per cent proportion of female managers in the sector did not satisfy us.
Rather than merely criticising an issue we were dissatisfied with, we decided to take action. At this stage, it is crucial to embark on the design and implementation of a development programme with the right partners. I can say that partnering with BUYEM on the ‘Women Leaders Shaping Healthcare’ certification programme was a great opportunity for our association. The certification programme, which we plan to run twice a year, featured distinguished academics from Boğaziçi University. Thanks to the collective contributions of all stakeholders, the project was enriched at virtually every stage of its implementation in line with the participants’ expectations. I would like to sincerely thank the BUYEM management and the esteemed academics from Boğaziçi University for the meticulous care and support they have shown for this project.
Aylin OLSUN PWN

“As the Zorlu Group, we are supporting this transformation with an innovative approach by taking significant steps towards a sustainable future in line with our ‘Smart Life 2030’ vision. By placing people at the heart of this transformation, fostering talent development through our agile, dynamic and innovation-focused work culture is among our key objectives. To empower our managers—who will lead the transformation we aim for and ensure sustainable success within our Group—to become inspiring role models, we have launched the Zorlu Group Management Academy Development Programme. For this programme, we have chosen to draw on the knowledge and experience of Boğaziçi University, one of the most distinguished institutions in our country.
In this programme, developed in collaboration with BÜYEM, we have included three modules for our managers focusing on the topics of “The New World Order”, “Effective Management” and “Agile Leadership”. BÜYEM’s academic expertise in designing the training content and their support in delivering the training were invaluable to us. We have now completed the first cycle of our programme, which was designed for colleagues holding managerial positions across the Group. During this process, we received very positive feedback from the managers who participated in the programme. In line with this feedback, we aim to continue our collaboration with BÜYEM to include all managers within our Group in this programme according to a specific schedule.
