Conservation and Sustainable Use of Oceans and Water Resources

Boğaziçi University organises and supports various activities to promote the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers and marine resources. The University carries out projects for the protection of aquatic ecosystems at both local and national levels.

Supported and Organised Activities:

1. Coastal Engineering Laboratory: It carries out various projects to develop engineering solutions for the sustainable management of coastal and coastal waters. This laboratory is at the forefront of research on sustainable maritime solutions.

2. Act4Litter’ Research Project: This project, carried out in cooperation with WWF Turkey, focuses on sustainable water management in the coastlines of the Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean regions of Turkey.

3. Salda Lake Research: Boğaziçi University collaborated with NASA in the project that analysed the microbial ecology of Salda Lake and submitted the data obtained to a qualified data bank to be used in Mars research.

4. Ergene River Research: Boğaziçi University contributed to an international study on pharmaceutical pollution in the Ergene River. This study revealed the effects of pharmaceutical compounds in the river on human health and the environment.

Education and Awareness Activities:

  • Open Lecture Series: Boğaziçi University aims to raise public awareness by organising open lectures on the protection and sustainable use of water resources. These lectures cover topics such as marine pollution, water management and sustainable tourism.

Academic Contributions:

  • Dr Akgün İlhan: Dr. İlhan, who works on sustainability at the University's Department of Tourism Management, organises trainings and radio programmes on water management, water crisis and climate change.

Boğaziçi University makes significant contributions to the protection and sustainable use of water resources through research, education and awareness raising activities.
