Cooperation with Local Communities in the Conservation of Shared Land Ecosystems (2023)

Boğaziçi University has a strong collaboration with local communities for the conservation and sustainable management of shared land ecosystems. This cooperation aims to carry out joint projects in areas such as ecosystem conservation and sustainable agriculture by ensuring the participation of both on-campus and neighbouring communities. The Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Tarlataban Collective are two important initiatives that strengthen this cooperation.

Wildlife Conservation Commission:

This commission was established to protect plant and animal populations on Boğaziçi University campuses, manage ecosystems sustainably, and promote biodiversity on campus. The Commission exchanges information with local communities on the protection of local ecosystems and strengthens this cooperation through various projects.

Tarlataban Collective

Tarlataban Collective is an initiative founded at Boğaziçi University that organises nature-friendly agricultural activities based on collective labour and sharing. Encouraging agricultural production in living spaces limited by urban conditions, this collective aims to contribute to communities through sustainable agricultural activities on campus and in the neighbourhood. The Tarlataban Collective organises events open to participants with the aim of preserving ecological balance and promoting food sovereignty, and aims to establish a fairer, sustainable system in the food chain.

The main aim of the collective is to establish a nature-friendly and sharing production model by establishing a relationship between the components within the campus. Questioning the injustices imposed by the capitalist system in food production and the structure that ignores the ecological balance, Tarlataban advocates the active participation of people in agricultural processes and food sovereignty.

What do we do?

  • Collective urban agriculture
  • Local food production and distribution
  • Application of permaculture and nature-friendly agriculture methods

How do we organise? The Tarlataban Collective follows a horizontal organisation model in which participants take equal responsibility, decisions are made together and everyone is involved without discrimination of race, gender, language, religion.

National Action Plan for Sustainable Consumption and Production:
