Contribution to Art and Our Heritage

Boğaziçi University fulfills its mission of preserving and disseminating the arts and cultural heritage through student societies and events organized within the university. The University actively contributes to the local art scene by organizing numerous public art and cultural events each year. The University's contributions to the arts are summarized below:

Albert Long Hall Classical Music Concerts

Boğaziçi University has been bringing music lovers together since 1996 with the classical music concerts organized at Albert Long Hall. These concerts feature world-renowned artists and young talents. Dozens of classical music concerts are organized at Albert Long Hall every year, and these events have an important place in the cultural life of Istanbul. These concerts, which are free of charge, are open to both university members and the public.

Mithat Alam Film Center

Founded in 1999, Mithat Alam Film Center (MAFM) is an important art center established to promote cinema culture at Boğaziçi University. It organizes film screenings, workshops, panels and talks, offering students and film lovers a broad perspective on the world of cinema. The center also organizes interviews and events with important figures in the history of Turkish cinema to keep the film culture alive.

SineBU

SineBU is Turkey's first movie theater with audio description infrastructure established at Boğaziçi University. This cinema, which presents the leading films of world and Turkish cinema to students and the public, offers special screenings especially for visually and hearing impaired individuals. SineBU aims to make access to the arts possible for everyone. In addition, Boğaziçi University Cinema Club, which is part of the university, brings together cinema enthusiasts with regular film screenings and analysis events.

Fine Arts Department

Boğaziçi University's Fine Arts Department offers students training in various art disciplines such as painting, ceramics, music, graphics and photography. This department aims to provide a university experience intertwined with art by supporting students who are interested in art. The department regularly organizes exhibitions, concerts and performances, strengthening the university's contribution to the arts.

Boğaziçi University Music Club and Taşoda Festival

Boğaziçi University Music Club is one of the oldest student music ensembles in Turkey. It holds an important place in the independent music scene with its annual Taşoda Festival. In this festival, musicians from Boğaziçi University and other universities take the stage and bring music lovers together.

Boğaziçi University Theater Group

The university's theater troupes and Boğaziçi University Players (BÜO) bring art lovers together with the plays they stage regularly throughout the year. BÜO is one of the oldest theater companies in Turkey and contributes greatly to the university culture. Regularly meeting with the public, the theater performances appeal to a wide audience.

Other Art Events of Boğaziçi University

Boğaziçi University organizes the Classic Car Exhibition, Earthquake Resistant Cities Exhibition and many other art, culture and science exhibitions. These exhibitions are important events that bring communities together as well as contributing to the local and international cultural heritage of the university.

With these strong contributions to the arts, Boğaziçi University makes valuable contributions to the local and national cultural scene and supports cultural development through artistic activities that appeal to all segments of society.

Classical Music Feast at Boğaziçi University: AHL Concerts Continue on 20 March

Boğaziçi University's prestigious music series, Albert Long Hall (AHL) Classical Music Concerts, continues on 20 March 2024 with selected works from the chamber music repertoire.

The soloists of the Tekfen Resident Ensemble performing at this concert include:

The programme will feature chamber music works by four important composers of the classical music world:

Violin and Piano Recital at Albert Long Hall

Classic Cars on Display at South Square

The Classic Car Exhibition, organised by the Boğaziçi University Culture, Arts and Events Department, attracted great interest at South Square. The event, held with the support of the Classic Mercedes-Benz Club, showcased important classic car models produced between 1950 and 2000.

Club members who participated in the exhibition answered visitors' questions about the cars, providing information and enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere. Organised as part of Boğaziçi University's cultural and artistic events, the exhibition was an enjoyable gathering for classic car enthusiasts.

Taşoda Music Festival Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary at Boğaziçi South Campus

Organised by the Boğaziçi University Music Club (BÜMK) for the past 30 years, the Taşoda Music Festival took place at South Campus on 10–12 May.

Over the course of three days, Boğaziçi music groups took the stage and performed dozens of pieces from various genres, including rock and jazz.

The concerts held on campus created an enthusiastic atmosphere among students and participants. Throughout the festival, music lovers enjoyed themselves and shared a cultural experience.

Following the event, BÜMK expressed its gratitude through social media to club members who contributed to the preparation and execution of the festival, performing artists, sponsors, and participants. BÜMK emphasized that this event continues their efforts to preserve and develop Boğaziçi's music culture.

Boğaziçi University Albert Long Hall Classical Music Concerts 2024-2025 Season Begins

Boğaziçi University’s long-standing classical music series, the Albert Long Hall Classical Music Concerts, will kick off the 2024-2025 season with its first concert on 30 October 2024 at 7:30 PM at Albert Long Hall on the South Campus.

Organised in collaboration with the Tekfen Resident Ensemble, the concerts will feature selections from the rich repertoire of chamber music. Works by prominent classical composers such as Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven, and Gershwin will be performed. The programme for the first concert includes Mozart's overture to The Magic Flute, Poulenc's sextet for woodwinds and piano, Rossini's overture to The Barber of Seville, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

Throughout the autumn season, experienced soloists and members of the Tekfen Resident Ensemble will take the stage. Concerts featuring works by composers such as Schulhoff, Smetana, Beethoven, and Strauss are also planned for 27 November and 25 December.

Ticket prices are set at 250 TL for adults and 50 TL for students. Tickets for the season opening concert on 30 October will go on sale on Thursday, 17 October 2024.

The Founder of Our Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Honoured at Boğaziçi University

The founder of our republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was honoured at a ceremony held at Boğaziçi University South Campus on the 86th anniversary of his passing. Boğaziçi University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Naci İnci and members of the university laid carnations at the bust of Atatürk.

As part of the commemoration programme, Prof. Dr. Sevtap Demirci, Director of the Atatürk Principles and Revolution History Institute, delivered a presentation titled ‘Military High Schools and Atatürk's Intellectual World.’ Additionally, the Boğaziçi University Turkish Music Choir performed songs beloved by Atatürk.

Boğaziçi University Albert Long Hall Classical Music Concerts

Boğaziçi University has been organising Albert Long Hall Classical Music Concerts since 1996, bringing music lovers together. With its unique acoustics, 2000 pipe organ, two Steinway pianos and a capacity of 500 people, Albert Long Hall stands out as a distinguished venue that hosts both national and international artists.

The concerts aim to support the cultural development of young people and spread cultural awareness while presenting a rich programme that brings together different disciplines of art. World-renowned artists, orchestras, chamber music ensembles and young talents have taken the stage in the series, in which approximately 500 performances have taken place to date. Many valuable artists and ensembles, including Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Fazıl Say, İdil Biret and Deutsche Oper Berlin Chamber Orchestra, have taken part in these events.

Concert tickets are offered at a very reasonable price in order to facilitate access to everyone, thus reaching a wider audience. These concerts appeal to a wide audience of music lovers in Istanbul, including members of Boğaziçi University.

Mithat Alam Film Centre

Founded in 1999 with the donation of Mithat Alam, Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Center (MAFM) is located in South Campus and aims to support students interested in cinema in different areas of cinema from idea to production. The Centre offers a wide range of opportunities to students with its 61-seat Cinema Hall, Film Viewing Room, which offers the opportunity to watch individual films, Cinephile Room, which is used for cinema conversations and research, and Archive Room, which houses one of Turkey's most important film archives.

In addition, in the Natuk Birkan Building on the South Campus, there is an Editing Room where films can be edited and an office where Altyazı Monthly Cinema Magazine, published by the Centre, is prepared. The Centre provides students with film-related events and resources, creating a unique learning and sharing space for film enthusiasts.

SineBU Boğaziçi University's Original Cinema Hall

Founded in 2015 and a member of the Europa Cinemas network, SineBU is a movie theatre operating within Boğaziçi University. SineBU brings together students and cinema lovers with the films that have won awards at important festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance and other important festivals and that attract attention throughout the year with monthly programmes prepared in the taste of a festival. These screenings, presented in cooperation with Başka Cinema, offer a rich cinema experience to students and cinema enthusiasts from outside the university with very affordable ticket prices.

In addition to being the only public institution cinema in Turkey, SineBU is also the first cinema hall with an infrastructure suitable for access by disabled individuals. With its design suitable for the participation of individuals with orthopedic disabilities and its audio description infrastructure, it aims to enable individuals with visual and hearing problems to have an equal, independent and free cinema experience. To this end, it is one of the founding members of the Equal Access to Culture platform and carries out pioneering activities in the field.

Integrated into the regulation and supervision system of the General Directorate of Cinema of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, SineBU offers moviegoers a quality cinema experience and sets an exemplary model for equal access to culture.

Boğaziçi University Fine Arts Department offers students elective courses in various art disciplines such as painting, ceramics, sculpture, music, ballet, graphics, photography, applied arts and drama. The department aims to enable students to discover their interest in art and develop their talents in addition to their specialised education. The Department of Fine Arts, which aims for a well-rounded artistic and cultural development, regularly organises exhibitions, concerts and performances, strengthening the artistic atmosphere within the university and reflecting Boğaziçi University's contribution to the arts to the society.

Protection and Recording of Cultural Heritage

Boğaziçi University attaches great importance to the protection and recording of intangible cultural heritage such as local folklore, traditions, language and knowledge. This heritage is recognised as a part of our social memory and cultural richness and is protected through various projects.

Nafi Baba Sufism, History and Cultural Heritage Application and Research Centre

Nafi Baba Sufism, History and Cultural Heritage Application and Research Centre examines the material, social, cultural and environmental characteristics of Nafi Baba Dervish Lodge, Rumelihisarı Martyrdomand Rumelihisarı settlementand their changes in history with interdisciplinary approaches. Thanks to these works, the historical and cultural texture of the region is preserved and carried to the future, and the sustainability of cultural heritage is ensured.

Rare Works and Historical Archives

The archive collections within the Boğaziçi University Library Rare Works and Historical Archives Branch Directorate include institutional archive and private collection materials donated to Boğaziçi University or acquired by the university.

The rare artefacts collection contains approximately 30 thousand artefacts in different genres from the 16th to the 20th century. The collection is based on the library of Robert College. Cyrus Hamlin, the founder and first principal of Robert College, mentions in his memoirs that Harvard University Law School donated 200 valuable books on the occasion of the establishment of the College. These donations and other books collected at that time were the first works that formed the basis of the Robert College library. The library collection was enriched over time and became one of the most important libraries of the period.

The archive collections include documents, letters, handwritten notes, photographs, postcards, newspaper and magazine clippings, published articles, awards and some objects belonging to important people. Some of the collections were classified and digitised within the scope of the project titled ‘History of Science, Culture and Education in Istanbul through Personal Archives’. The private archive collections in the Rare Works and Historical Archives Branch Directorate are as follows:

Our university also organises many activities for the protection of intangible cultural heritage through the Culture, Arts and Activities Branch Directorate and Student Activities Coordinatorship. These activities are carried out with the aim of protecting, preserving and transferring the cultural heritage of local communities to future generations.

Art and Cultural Heritage Contributions Sustainable Transport Targets and Practices

Boğaziçi University develops innovative transport solutions to facilitate mobility within and between campuses as well as to promote sustainable transport. Comprehensive strategies are implemented to support, measure and promote environmentally friendly transport alternatives such as public transport, walking, car sharing, cycling and electric vehicle use.

Free Shuttle Service Between Campuses: Boğaziçi University offers free shuttle services for students and employees to facilitate transportation between campuses. These shuttles provide fast and comfortable access to on-campus facilities and activities such as meetings, seminars, libraries, laboratories and sports complexes. Shuttle routes and timings are regularly optimised and this service is intensively used by the members of the university.
