Water Stress and Climate Resilience Discussed at the Yeşilhat Academy Meeting

The “Yeşilhat Academy Meetings” panel, organised jointly by Boğaziçi University and Anadolu Agency’s (AA) Yeşilhat platform, took place at Demir Demirgil Hall on 27 April 2026. Under the theme “Agriculture in the Face of the Climate Crisis: Risks, Adaptation and Solutions”, the event brought together experts from Boğaziçi University’s Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies—Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz, Prof. Dr. Murat Türkeş and Prof. Dr. Cem Avcı—to assess the effects of climate change on agriculture, water resources and energy systems.

The panel emphasised that Türkiye is moving from water stress towards water scarcity, with the threshold already exceeded in certain regions. Speakers highlighted that prolonged droughts, heatwaves, irregular precipitation and short periods of intense rainfall can rapidly turn meteorological drought into agricultural and hydrological drought. By examining how changing climatic conditions are rendering conventional water and infrastructure planning methods based on historical precipitation and streamflow data increasingly inadequate, the event underscored the importance of adaptation, climate-resilient planning and sustainable water management in addressing water scarcity risks.
