AX-3 Team Meets Boğaziçi Students
Turkey's first astronaut Alper Gezeravcı and astronauts Michael López-Alegría, Walter Villadei, and Marcus Wandt, who are part of the Axiom-3 space mission, met with students at Boğaziçi University. Boğaziçi University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Naci İnci welcomed the team at the Albert Long Building on the South Campus. Rector İnci expressed his hope that the astronauts' achievements would inspire the students and emphasised that Boğaziçi University aims to nurture future scientists, engineers, and leaders by supporting scientific curiosity and the spirit of discovery.
Prof. Dr. İnci noted that space travel requires not only advanced technological research but also a brave and adventurous spirit. He stated that space travel broadens humanity's horizons and is the most concrete proof of the union of science and technology. He also mentioned that the dreams depicted in science fiction series have become a reality today.
Alper Gezeravcı, Turkey's first astronaut, said that although space was seen as a dream of other countries in his childhood, this perception has changed thanks to Turkey's National Space Programme. He stated that Turkish youth can now realise their own space dreams.
Gezeravcı explained that he conducted microalgae experiments in a zero-gravity environment on the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Boğaziçi University's ‘Microalgal Life Support Units for Space Missions’ (UzMAn) project under Turkey's National Space Programme. He emphasised that these experiments demonstrated the significant impact of microalgae on the water and oxygen cycle and that they are highly valuable for future space projects such as Turkey's manned moon mission. He also noted that Turkey aims to push the boundaries of space with rockets, rocket engines and other systems.
Michael López-Alegría, the Axiom-3 team leader, stated that astronauts who go into space for the first time take time to adapt to the microgravity environment, that being in space is a technical job, and that the training they receive teaches them to manage the unexpected. However, he noted that adapting to the microgravity environment is not easy and that the human body must adapt to it.
